Mischievious bears in Orsa
May 2nd, 2010 | By mervi | Category: Featured articles2.5.2010 by Pernilla Thalin, Photos by Anders Björklund
Hello friends,
During the last three weeks there’s been some ‘turbulence’ in our white bears’ enclosure. Ewa has shown signs of being in heat but now she has calmed down and plays and fools around with Wilbär just like before.
The bears are, of course, growing all the time but we had a little mishap with the scales so we haven’t been able to weigh them lately. What happened was that a keeper forgot to close the door to the den where the scales are kept. Needless to say Ewa and Wilbär didn’t throw away the opportunity to explore this funny device very thoroughly. When we discovered our misstake the bears had already done everything possible. You should have seen their eyes! They looked so incredibly pleased with themselves – their rascal look was really priceless. The scales are now under repair….
On May 22 we will celebrate the 1 year anniversary of the opening of the Polar World and Ewa’s and Wilbär’s first year in Orsa. We’re going to have extra information about polar bears, quizz for the visitors, refreshments in the exhibition building and lots more.
There hasn’t been any fish in the pond during the winter but we’ll plant salmon trouts around midsommer and continue until September. I’m sure the bears will be delighted when they can go fishing again.
The ice berg is much higher than last year and Ewa and Wilbär love to make caves in it. There’s also quite a lot of snow left in the enclosure and there are big pieces of ice floating in the pond. The week before Midsummer Eve we’re going to have a skiing competition and the loops will be made of the snow we have ‘spared’ for this occasion. After the competition the snow will be brought to our bears’ enclosure so they can have a ‘prolonged’ winter.
Greetings from Pernilla, Ewa and Wilbär

Dear Pernilla, Anders, Ewa & Wilbär,
Thank you so much for your lovely greetings from Orsa! Oh boy, you really have a proper polar bear environment up there. Imagine – snow by midsummer!
I wish you all a wonderful Spring and Summer – with lots of fish in the pond! Well, I guess Pernilla and Anders won’t be fishing there…..
Tack så mycket för hälsningarna och de underbara bilderna!

Dear Mervi – Thank you for making it again possible to get to know news from WILBÄR and EWA.
Dear Pernilla Thalin and photographer Anders Björklund – “Ich bin hin und weg”! The pictures are priceless, to put it in Mervi’s words! And it’s even an incredible improvement that the photos are with explaining and funny texts now. I appreciate this so much, as I have to admit it’s near to impossible to get apart Wilbär and Ewa just from view (blush!). I even do have some dificulties with KNUTI and GIOVANNA and FLOCKE and RASPI in this respect. Hopefully I will always be able to at least recognize KNUTI wherever he will be – but to be frank, I am even not too sure about that… Enjoy springtime even though with snow – unbelievable!
Dear Mervi – Thanks to your good relations to Pernilla again we get such wonderful news from Wilbär and Ewa.
Thank you so much for keeping us informed regularly.
Dear Pernilla and Dear Anders,
the pictures with the captions are so nice that it is difficult to express how much I appreciate them. Both youngsters look so well and it is a great joy to read that they do not only look so well, but also they are so well due to your loving care.
Greetings into the polar bear paradise, these two have really won the Jackpot.

Dear Pernilla Thalin, dear Anders Björklund
If a polar bear could speak he would say:
” Orsa is all, a polar bear needs. That’s, what we call paradise!”
Thank you for this fantastic report and the beautiful pics!

Dear Pernilla and Anders, many thanks for the report and the photos. Oh my, I had to laugh when I read the adventure of the scales. Reminded me of Knut: when he was a little cub, according to an interview with his keeper, he was also always able to break the scales and therefore, in the end, his colleagues refused to borrow their scales. Becuase, just like Wilbar and Ewa, he was also good in making everything “Kaputt”. Well, maybe, they do not want to go on the scale, imagine that one or another human being would then decide that they have to go on diet!!!!! And of course, the snow world is their world. The photo of the two young ones testing the den together is indeed priceless. And there might be a big chance that if Ewa continues to follow her instinct, the maternity department will not be needed in a certain future. She might try to do it like the polar bears in the wild, in a real snow cave.
Dear Pernilla,
How wonderful to see, that Ewa and Wilbär are still enjoying their selfmade tunnels and dens.
I wish I could see it in reality again.
I will never forget the visit in Orsa in March.
Dear Pernilla and Anders!

Wilbär und Ewa haben wirklich das große Los gezogen.
Dear Mervi,
Again thank you for opening the lines of communication between KWM and Orsa! Through your efforts, we are able to follow the lives of Wilbar and Ewa.
Dear Pernilla and Dear Anders,
Thank you so much for this report. The bears are obviously happy and being well cared for. The photos are spectacular!
Hugs from Sarsam
Pernilla & Anders, thank you so much for those news!
*grin* That story of the thouroughly searched scales is so funny.
So you have The Other Bear Phenomen in Orsa. That’s when any mischief happened your plushies look at you sweetly and innocent and tell you that this had been The Other Bear. (At my household it’s either The Other Cat or The Other Horse).
Grüssles from Stuttgart
such lucky bears!!!! Thank you Mervi and Pernilla for bringing them to us. It is pure delight to hear of their antics. How I wish I could have seen their satisfied, naughty faces. hehe

Dear Mervi, Pernilla Thalin, Anders Björklund,
What wonderful news from Orsa. It looks as if possibly Ewa’s maternal instincts are taking her to denning behavior so that she might build an ice cave. In the one photo, she seems to be looking at Wilbär in such a way as to implore him to do his part
. Unfortunately, Wilbär might still be a few years shy of being able to complete ‘his part.’ Nice to see how things are unfolding at Orsa!
Bear Hugs,
Tish
