Wilbär and Ewa are growing fast
Jul 22nd, 2009 | By mervi | Category: Featured articles22.7.2009
It was several weeks ago I visited Wilbär and Ewa in Orsa and just like everybody else I was curious to know how the couple are doing today. I contacted Pernilla Thalin for a mini-interwiew and she kindly agreed.
First I was wondering if they now have fish in the lake and how they feel about it.
- Yes, there’s fish in the lake now. Every Wednesday about 25 salmon trouts are planted in the water. Wilbär and Ewa love fishing – they play in the water catching the fish and of course, then enjoy a gourmet fish dinner.
There has been many thunderstorms and it has rained a lot in Orsa this summer. I asked how the bears are coping with the bad weather and what the keepers are doing to make them feel more secure.
- Ewa and Wilbär were clearly frightened and uneasy when we had a thunder storm here. We opened the doors to all caves so they were free to choose whether they wanted to be out in the enclosure or stay in a cave. They calmed down very quickly though and spent the afternoon napping.
Are there any other news of the ‘Swedish´ polar bears?
- They are growing very fast. We have trained them to step on the scales so we can weigh them every day or at least several times a week. Both weigh about 215 kilos now!
I’m sorry there are no new photos of the bears but our photographer is visiting Svalbard at the moment I’ll ask him to send you some photos when he’s back. Wilbär, Ewa and I send our best greetings to the readers of Knuti’s Weekly.
Thank you, Pernilla, for the interwiew!

Mervi, that is a wonderful featured article about the “Sweden” bears. I am very astonished that they put 215 kg on the scales now. And, I am very happy that they are doing well. It was very kind of Pernilla to give you the interview so that we are able to follow their further development.
BG, caren
Hi Mervi,
Thank you for setting up the interview with Wilbar’s and Ewa’s new mum! My, how they are growing–helped no doubt by the 25 salmon trout per week!! I wonder who catches the most or if it is about even! I also wonder if maybe having the two bears together helps them deal with thunder storms better. It is always good to have a buddy during a storm of any kind…
Bear hugs, Sarsam
Dear Mervi and Pernilla –
A picturesque setting in the lives of two picturesque polar bears ~ how lovely that we are the benefactors of an update interview. There are just some very important details that one has to keep track of in one’s life. Great news on their weights / the same / very likely aided by being able to catch fish! Hihihi, firsthand, we know Knuti’s preference for salmon.
For one, I am delighted that we have an on-site correspondent, and one who has traveled to site. These precious cargo will delight us even past the time that little ones come along!
Bear Hugs, Tish
Mervi, Thanks for the update; so glad those two lovely bears are having the good life! And that last picture is just precious–those famous Wilbaer ears! xo k-j
Wil is such a great swimmer, I can imagine how happy he is in Orsa’s big ponds, and now the swimming is not just recreational but also a hunt for food.
Thank you Mervi for the news from Pernilla, and thank you Pernilla for giving us a close up insider view into Eva’s and Wilbar’s lives!
Simply Thank you, Mervi, and Thank you, Pernilla!

What a wonderful start into the day – brandnew firsthand news of a sweetheart of mine.
Happy greetings back to Pernilla, Ewa and Wilbär and a big hug to Mervi for doing such a good job as godmother

Hi Mervi!
The news are very interesting. It is very nice of you to ask Pernilla about the bears. I am happy that the both do very good.

Mervi – Thanks for the updates on sweetie Wilbar. Now that I know he has settled down with Ewa and seems content, I worry less about him. He’s looking more and more like his lovely momma, Corinna as he grows up. Miss Pernilla and the other keepers seem to be very kind and accommodating and I think these two are in great hands. Here’s to them both and a wonderful life ahead!!
Thank you Mervi for the news about Wilbär and Ewa. It’s good to hear that they are doing well. But I am sure that they are in a paradise for polar bears.
I think about travelling to Orsa in winter to see the snow hill which Pernilla Thallin is planing for the two bears.

Dear Mervi,
there are society ladies and there are “icebear contact ladies”; guess whom I appreciate more!!!
Thank you so much for contacting and interviewing Pernilla Thalin.
I’m so happy to hear that Ewa and Wilbär enjoy fishing and playing in the water.
Also good news that the bears have the possibility to choose whether they stay inside or outside during a thunderstorm. Pernilla seems to be a very good bearkeeper.
Bearhugs
