Melted ice and stolen kisses in Orsa
Oct 17th, 2009 | By mervi | Category: Featured articles17.10.2009 – By Pernilla Thalin, Orsa Polar World
A few days ago part of the pond in Wilbär’s and Ewa’s enclosure was frozen and the bears were in seventh heaven! Wilbär discovered he could make a hole in the ice with his paws and he could see water bubbling. It was so fun! He even found out he could dive under the ice and look up again in the holes he had made. Wilbär was so fascinated by the ice that he played several hours without a break. Swimming around, making holes, diving, playing peek-a-boo…..he seemed to be saying ‘this is what I call a suitable game for a polar bear’.
Ewa thought it was all a bit scary in the beginning with sounds of breaking ice and how it felt to be standing on the cold ice. However, after a while even she decided to explore the ‘new world’ and started swimming, biting the ice floats – she seemed to like the taste of them.
Unfortunately I hadn’t my camera with me on that day so there are no photos but if you imagine a bunch of children enjoying the first snow you know how the bears were acting.
Isn’t it typical that the next day when I was equipped with the camera the temperature was getting higher and the ice had melted away! Grrrrrr…..!!!! Well, we can’t ‘order’ the proper weather…..and we certainly can’t conduct our bears. They have a mind of their own.
Anyway, it’s just a matter of days now when we will have snow permanently. Then the snow gun starts working and very soon Wilbär and Ewa will have an ice berg to climb. I wonder if they want to have sleigh…..or slalom skis…
Wilbär weighs now 256 kilos. I know he eats too much – that’s why we haven’t put any more salmon trouts in the pond so he doesn’t gain too much weight. I guess he’s not so happy about this diet.
I took some photos yesterday. Not photos of ice breakers but warm, romantic pictures of two relaxed bears lying and enjoying each other’s company in the woods using stones as pillows. They were so cute! Ewa tried to be a ‘hard-to-catch’ girl but Wilbär is not a bear whos gives up and finally he managed to steal a little kiss! Ain’t that a guy?!
I have also put two short videos in Facebook – look for Orsa Björnpark.
I hope I can bring you some snowy and icy news next week!
Greetings from Pernilla
An ordinary day in a Polar Bear dream….Orsa Bearpark – Ewa and Wilbär 16th of October 2009
Hmmm, what was that, dinner time…?
No, it was just Pernilla, taking pictures again….get back to sleep….
This is so nice, so quiet and peaceful…..
What is she doing, could we please have some privacy here……
Hey there, you are awake now! Perhaps a small kiss!

Dear Pernilla,
Wilbär and Ewa are two sweeties and they are super models even without ice and snow! Thank you so much for posting the news and the photos!
Hugs from Mervi

Hallo Mervi,

Dear Mervi and Dear Pernilla, many thanks for bringing this news of the youngsters. And you know, Pernilla, it is not such a problem for not having your camera with that icy day. Most probably, many more days will come and we all are already looking forward to your pictures. And yes, of course, Wilbar will not be soo happy with his so-called forced diet, but better a healthy young bear than a fat and sick one, isn’t it.
Kind regards,
Patricia
Dear Mervi,
we do thank you so much for keeping us update about Wilbär and Ewa by the help of Pernilla who provides you regularly with the news from Orsa. These news are so fantastic.
Picture #3 shows us a Wilbär-Pascha-Bear, he looks to cuuute. I can imagine he is not very happy with the diet but of course 256 kg is heavyweight. Anton&Corinna must be very proud of their lovely son and beautiful “daughter in Law”.
Hugs, caren&bernd

I”m convinced these are the luckiest “bears in captivity” in the whole world. I hope one day ALL the animals in captivity have such nice accommodations. Thank you Mervi and Pernilla!
Dear Pernilla and dear Mervi.
you made my day. Thank you so much about the great Wilbär-Ewa-News from Orsa.
Wilbär will become a big guy like his father.
I’m going to tell Rasputin that Wilbär has to diet. And his own keepers are planning the same for him .

Dear Mervi, dear Pernilla
Thank you so much for the latest news from Orsa. It is such a joy to read about two young happy bears. Ehemm, Wilbär will not be so lucky at the moment because of his diet.
I am sure in the winter we can see a lot of pictures of two bears playing in the snow.

Dear Pernilla, dear Mervi!
Thank you for the report and pictures from Orsa. I think Wilbär needs some more calories because of swimming in the cold water.
Greetings
Dear Pernilla thank you very much for the great news and for the wonderful pictures, I am very happy in knowing that Wilbar and Ewa are happy and that have a wonderful enclosure to live and a keeper so dedicated.
Dear Mervi thank you for to bring Pernilla for us and to post the wonderful reports of Orsa
