30.05.2009 – Video by Orsa Grönklitt AB

Ewa and Wilbär are enjoying the clear water in Orsa and spend much of their time swimming. Every now and then it’s nice to do some snow sliding and after that ‘put on the dirty look’. I can hardly wait to see these two lovely bears live in a couple of weeks!

Greetings from Mervi

  2. Hello Gerhard! Willkommen in Knuti’s Weekly! Vielen Dank für dein Kommentar. Ja, Orsa Polar World ist fantastic. Ich werde Ewa und Wilbär um zwei Wochen besuchen und freue mich schon über mein Besuch.

    Liebe Grüsse, Mervi

  3. Oh, joy….xo k-j

  4. Thrilling!
What a well made video and the music.
Wilbear is such a great swimmer since he was a small cub. His middle name should be yellow submarine, err a white submarine that is.
He’s clearly enjoying the expanse of water he has at his disposal. I am really happy for him.

Thank you Mervi for this beautiful video.

  5. oh my goodness… it’ so cute to see Ewa and Wilbär in this fantastic area. It’s unbelievable…
Many thanks for showing us !!!
    Greetings from Conny Hamburg

  6. Well those two look contented and at peace with the world. Well done Orsa. I am sure all animal lovers are happy especially those of us who adore Wilbar. This music however, is too romantic. What are we going to see next Orsa ….candles and roses? Look Orsa , Wilbar is just a baby…just out of diapers so speak. Don’t you go fast forwarding my angel into adulthood with Dutch girl! Give him some toys and a comforter not seduction music!!

  7. Ohhh, the joys of Orsa… set to some relaxing theme music… polar bear plunges with a companion close by… nuzzling with that companion… munching on an apple from the paw… running up and through the snow… lying on the back for a good scratch… hunting fish [not yet seen].

Yes, Ewa and Wilbaer seem to have it all ~ in fact, I want what they have! A beautiful choreographed life… Wilbaer away from his overbearing Mum, Ewa seeking new pastimes. Orsa looks like the land of Milk & Honey! We will need to check back on these new found friends who have been caught really enjoying themselves… And what’s wrong with that?!!

Hooray for Ewa and Wilbaer ~ I cannot get enough of your current video.

    Hugs, Tish

  8. Dear Mervi –

Is it true, did I read correctly? Will you and Vesa be going to Orsa to visit the two polar bear park novices?!!

If so, then we can be expecting your journalistic expertise, including photos and videos?

And the double whammy, you will meet with the powers that be and put in the good words for Knut and Flocke? Hihihi, I must have an affirmative to all my requests; that is, if I read your writing correctly ;-) .

    Ambassadors/Ambassadresses for Knut & Flocke,

    #1 Tish

  9. Hi Mervi,
Thank you for providing us with this beautiful video! I look forward to your first-hand reports after your visit to Orsa. I am having trouble distinguishing between Ewa and Wilbar now–I thought Will was the smaller whiter bear, but when I see them separately, I just cannot tell which is which..!! I’m sure they know, though. So far so good, they seem to be good friends. It is really a joy to see them running up and sliding down their snow hill!

  10. Thank you all for your comments!

Tish – yes, it’s true! I’m going to visit Ewa and Wilbär in a couple of weeks from now! I’m so thrilled!!

    Hugs from Mervi

  11. Mervi,

I hope some readers aren’t misunderstanding my light-hearted sassiness and over-protective instincts with respect to Wilbar and the Dutch girl. Ah well….
Anyway, enjoy your visit to Orsa and please give Wilbar ten kisses for me.
Tell Wilbar not to “rush into a relationship or marriage” just yet because he is just a toddler and that serious looking Dutch girl needs to unwind a bit before any nuptials can take place. Tell him his Auntie Celinne loves him dearly and one day she’s coming to Sweden to see him.

  12. Celinne, Of course you are not over-protective of Wilbar! He is a fine but immature teenage bear. He definitely needs the advice of his Knutian Aunties and Uncles. It would not hurt him to have a man-to-man (oh, excuse me, a bear-to-bear) talk with Lars. Lars can tell him a thing or two about the babes…

  13. Celinne — Don’t be so hard on yourself, you were experiencing a ‘first response’ to the video, which seems to have altered a bit. I must admit that the expansiveness of the Orsa Bear Park has made my mind go racing about the possibilities of other bears also co-habiting there, given that it is so large. I’m sure that the Director, caretakers and all involved would want to closely monitor the ‘getting along factor’ so that the beautiful surroundings reflect and permeate the good natures of the bears that might be brought in to have a chance at living the nature-ensconced free life.

Mervi — I’m so happy that you will have a grand peek at Orsa very soon. I hope that your visit goes to the max! From your very aptly provided link, I was able to correspond with the Orsa Director, of course making my burning inquiry. I received a most adequate response as to the seeming mission statement of the park, but no direct answer to my sneaking inquiry ;-(. Here is the body of the email with response included: [I daresay Mr. Bjorklund is an approachable man.]

    Dear Dear Anders –

As a polar bear aficionado, I am most charmed with your 24 Mai 2009 l-
o-v-e photos of the two youthful polar bears Ewa and Wilbaer coming
    together in Sweden!

Glad you lika the pictures of the meeting. I think the surroundings and
the area for the bears are very important to get them satisfied. We have
built the largest polarbear enclosure in the world with lakes, creeks,
glacier etc. They love it and are very interested in each other.

    Best regards
    Anders Björklund
    Director

Say, do you think that such a match will ever happen between Knut of
Zoo Berlin and Flocke of Zoo Nuremberg?

    Yours,

    Tish
    California, USA

Of course, what humans want and believe is apt might, in fact, go badly or turn sour, so that interaction must also be considered. Doesn’t seem like a possibility, but anything can happen.

Enjoy your Orsa visit, Mervi, and p-l-e-a-s-e carry the good word ;-) BH’s, Tish

  14. Aww Sarsam, you are so funny and wise. Wilbar does need to have a “bear-to-bear” chat with Uncle Lars who will inform him that a “playa’s life is overrated” One wife is more than enough for any right-thinking male bear. Furthermore that one wife should be married when both bears are middle-aged and wise in the ways of the world. Ummm, maybe great granddaddy Manasse does have the right idea about late marriages.

  15. @sarsam, Celinne
Wilbär doen’t need a bear-to-bear-talk with Uncle Lars. Jens has photo-proofs (on his blog polarbeargermany.de) that Wilbär was very well briefed by his father Anton (p.e. http://data5.blog.de/media/421/3503421_0e679d3b97_m.jpeg or http://data5.blog.de/media/563/3479563_a55e574841_m.jpeg). Anton’s gone through all the mentioned experiences plus knowing very well what happens if bear don’t gives way when the wife really wants something.

Sarsam me too has problems with who’s who in that film. But on some sequences I’m pretty sure – Ewa is a very slender lady especially when she comes out of the water ~ there isn’t that much bear left. Wilbär is stouter and he has the broader face. And for me it looks like they are almost alike in height and weightclass so I’m really curious for Mervi’s seen-with-her-own-eyes report.

    Grüssles Velvet

  16. Velvet,

I have never seen such touching photos of Wilbar with his papa. Awww, these are beautiful…exquisitely so. I am glad that Anton gave his son some pointers on handling expectations and demands from his better half in the years to come. The media never focused too much on Anton except to say he is a huge bear. Anton is lucky to have the beautiful and gracious Corinna as his wife.
Uncle Lars…well Lars is just a very, very exhausted and broke bear playa who is thinking about penning a Broadway musical titled ” Bear ‘in Bankruptcy: My Three Wives,” to earn some cash to pay off credit card bills.
I really hope Wilbar does not take his cue from playboy Lars.

  17. Velvet and Celinne,

Thank you Velvet for the pointers in identifying Ewa versus Wilbar! Shall we say they are both beautiful/handsome bears and deserve that bear-friendly park. You both are right, what was I thinking about having Wilbar talk to Lars, when he has a knowledgeable and mature father to get him started right in life. Thank you Velvet for the link to Jens’ photos–they are awesome.

    Bear hugs,
    Sarsam

  18. Velvet — Danke for the very beautiful pictures of Wilbaer coming together in the presence of both parents. To have been there at the moment and retrieved the pictures is being in the right place at the right moment (thank you Jens)! Trying to reach Jens’ blog, I happened upon some uTube footage of Mum and Wilbaer going at it.

It must be an exacting, continual balance for zoo keepers to gauge behaviors that might be starting to become overly aggressive and to then plan for the shifts in location. The evolving puberty of the male cub seemingly turning on his Mum when they prior shared such a loving relationship is once such example. Yes, as pointed out above, it does smack of the throes of marriage, where changes can begin to unravel based on a glance. What is life about?!! EVER-changing, that’s for sure…

Enjoying the anthropomorphic comments of everyone, as they see fit to comment.

Perhaps we will ALL be commenting when some decisive action emits from the address of the one residing at Zoo Berlin just taking life as it comes. Knut, we are all thinking about you and trying to make changes that will bring you in contact with your polar bear brethren. BH’s, Tish

  19. Tish,

We are all a bit apprehensive and elated at the same time about our boy bears and their rites of passage into bear puberty. I guess that seeing Wilbar’s big move to Orsa set up worrying signals in me about Knuti’s future.
Will he be content with the choices that are being made for him at Berlin Zoo? Will he ever find a perfect mate?
Will Wilbar be comfortable with Ewa – will he he fall in “love” as Bill did with Lara?
At the same time, we want them to remain young and innocent without the complications of courting, mating and getting older. Ah, life in 3D existence. Never been easy.
