Widely known polar bear Knut has been proving it: Animals in zoos need activity, stimulation and change.For a long time now scientific research has pointed to the necessity of Behavioural Enrichment for animals living in zoological institutions.In many countries, and in Germany as well, this concept has been realized successfully and has become part of the daily routines in animal care.But not so in Berlin! Neither the Berlin Zoo, known as the zoo with the greatest variety of species worldwide, nor the Berlin Animal Park (under the same management) provide any Behavioural Enrichment. On the contrary, it is even banned in both institutions.Many visitors have been contacting the director and asked for a change. In vain!Within the EU larger enclosures are now obligatory. But larger enclosures alone are not sufficient unless they are also transformed into interesting and stimulating habitats for the animals.We need each voice in support of our request: Behavioural Enrichment for All Animals in Berlin Zoo and Animal Park!
Beschaeftigung fuer die Tiere im Berliner Zoo und im Tierpark BerlinDer weltweit bekannte Eisbaer Knut hat es uns gezeigt: Zootiere brauchen Beschaeftigung, Anregung und Abwechslung. Wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen belegen seit langem die Notwendigkeit von Beschaeftigungsmöglichkeiten fuer die Tiere in zoologischen Einrichtungen. In vielen Laendern, und auch in Deutschland, wird dieses Konzept schon erfolgreich umgesetzt und gehoert inzwischen zur taeglichen Praxis in der Tierhaltung. Nicht jedoch im Zoo Berlin und dem ihm angeschlossenen Tierpark. Hier ist Beschaeftigung sogar untersagt! Schon viele Besucher haben sich in dieser Angelegenheit an den Direktor gewandt. Vergebens.Groessere Gehege sind nun in der EU verpflichtend geworden, aber groessere Gehege allein reichen nicht aus, wenn sie nicht gleichzeitig auch zu einem anregenden Lebensraum fuer die Tiere werden.Wir brauchen jede Stimme zur Unterstuetzung unserer Forderung: Beschaeftigung fuer alle Tiere in Zoo und Tierpark!
