By the way, how is our old dear Bernie doing these days? I read that he was suffering again in the beginning of the week. Hope everything is better again.

Hello Patricia,
unfortunately, the news about Bernie is not good. He looked worde today than before. The other day a keeper supposedly said (I did not hear it personally) that Bernie will not make it through the winter if he is in such a bad shape now. According to him the kidneys are affected due to the medication he has been receiving.
Every day we worry now whether or not Bernie will still be there when we come.
Today, he was especially bad off and Dr. Ochs was seen watching Bernie on his enclosure.
Shortly before feeding time Bernie dragged himself down to the moat, it took a long time. When he arrived there, all he wanted was a drink of water. The bears do not have fresh water on their enclosure. Then he saw the keeper and he tried to make it back up. It seemed to take forever. Finally he made it an at that time he did not have the strength to climb over the tree trunk right away. Later on, he made it around and sat there eating his carrots.
To us, it is heartbreaking to think that they will have to euthanize him. He is such a gentle and beautiful creature. On the other hand, an animal should not have to suffer unnecessarily if there is no hope for recovery and if it is in constant pain. Bernie is the youngest of the bears, he is only 24. We are till hoping for his recovery but the chances are slim.

Danke, Doris, für Deinen Beitrag zu Bernie. Es stimmt traurig, das es diesem schönen Tier sehr schlecht geht.
Auf einem Deiner Bernie Fotos schauen seine Augen so traurig aus, so als würde er fragen ob ihm keiner mehr helfen kann.
Drücken wir alle die Daumen das es ihm in den nächsten Tagen wieder besser geht. Die Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt ...

Hallo Doris, das ist ja eine sehr traurige Meldung. Ich hoffe auch, daß es Berni bald besser geht.
Warten auf die Abwechslung des Tages. Die Vormittagsfütterung.
Lars spielte heute morgen mit seinen Pfoten.
Wir haben nicht nur sehr helle Spatzen im Zoo, sondern auch sehr helle Mäuse. Merkwürdig.

Good afternoon Doris,
Thank you for your update, I really appreciate it, although the news is - just like you wrote - very sad and heartbreaking. Believe me, I join you all in crossing my fingers and praying that a miracle may occur and that my dear old Bernie will get better soon. The first ime I came to Berlin (last year in February), the main reason for my visit was - of course - Knut, but Bernie and Jana have both immediately stolen my heart as well and this upon first sight.
But again, I agree that he may not suffer in case there is no cure or prognosis for a better result. However, I really hope that he is having another chance for some more years in good condition.
