Nach meinem gestrigen Zoobesuch war ich schon etwas deprimiert. Aber nachdem ich gerade die Fotos von Doris und Jessiegesehen habe, geht es mir schon viel besser.
Hätte er den alten Kauknochen nicht gefunden, wer weiß ob er dann so glücklich im Wasser gespielt hätte. Bestimmt nicht.
Es wäre nun wirklich an der Zeit, Knut etwas von seinem Spielzeug zu geben, damit er ein wenig Ablenkung hat. Ich bin mir sicher, dass sich auch Tosca darüber freuen würde.

Heute früh lag Knut unten rechts auf dem Felsen und schlief. Tosca lief auf der linken Seite vor und zurück. Irgendwie habe ich den Eindruck die Bären haben die Anlage aufgeteilt. Sie links, er rechts.
Knut wurde auf der rechten Seite gefüttert. Ein paar Stücke fielen vor ihm ins Wasser. Es wurde auch Futter auf den vorderen großen Felsen für ihn geworfen. Er holte sich von dort sein Futter und brachte es auf die rechte Seite. Ein paar Mal lief Tosca auf ihn zu. Er lief weg. Blieb aber auf dem vorderen Felsen stehen und brummte. Sie zog sich dann zurück.
Als ich ging lag Knut oben auf der Anlage und Tosca suchte das Wasser nach Futter ab. Sie fand viel. Einigen allerdings älteren Datums. So sah es jedenfalls aus.
Wie schön sind die Bilder von Jessie, wie sich Knut mit dem Kauknochen beschäftigt.
Wie wichtig ist Beschäftigungsmaterial. Auch für Tosca. Sowie ein Mulchbett für die Bären oder zwei. Das muß doch endlich mal machbar sein!!!

English translation of reports of Doris and Sylvia:
September 17 (Doris): When we arrived at the big enclosure, Tosco was laying on one side and Knut on the other. Shortly thereafter, he started to search for something. And look, he found a piece of a chewing bone, although rather flat but again hard. Knut was having a great time with that thingie, finally something that belongs solely to him. He joyfully played with it, just til the moment that it fell into the water (ATSCH!!!). As from his rocks, he paddled and paddled, but that stupid thing did not swim back to him. And so, Knuti has to go into the water to fish it up. Of course, he found it immediately and then the good times could start. He was swirling it around, hugged it and went to the glass shield to show to his visitors what a polar bear can do with such thing. It was put on the head, held close to the cheek, thrown in the air and so fort. It clearly showed us all a happy young polar bear and I am quite sure that all his visitors were as enthusiast as the bear and also very touched.
When Knuti noticed that Tosca was inside, he also entered – to come back with a big piece of meat that he obviously enjoyed and appreciated.
September 18 (Sylvia): Early this morning, Knuti was laying on the right sight and was sleeping. Tosca, on the left side, was walking back and from. Somehow, I have the feeling that the bears have divided the enclosure, Tosca takes the left part, and Knuti the right, from where he was also fed. A few pieces fell into the water, and some food was thrown on the rocks in front of him. A few times, Tosca came closer, but he ran away and started his protests. She then immediately left him. Shortly before I left, Knuti was at the upper side of the enclosure and Tosca searching for food in the water, where she found quite a lot, and some parts were according to me already over-dated.
According to Sylvia, it is becoming time to grant the bears toys or a “Mulchbett”, in the interest of all bears. And yes, I agree, it must be possible and feasible to provide things like that. Most probably, it will take away a good part of the stress.
Dear Ursula, I have seen your comment about the food delivered at Zoo Berlin. And I cannot agree with your statement. As you know, Gudrun is regularly making a Bear Delivery as well as many others do. So far, I never heard somebody complaining about unfriendly reactions. During my last visit, when Patrizia from Italy was there too, she handed over a lot of goodies for Knut to Ms. Weckert and these gifts were kindly and friendly accepted. And even given to Knut the very same day. And when Ms. Weckert was giving the grapes, the fishes, the baguette and the pumpkin to Knut, she took her time so that pics could be made of that (and I made them because it was such a nice souvenir, and I am sure that sooner or later Knuti will have her ball too). By the way, if I have a question, I have to ask it in English and so far, I always got a reply (and as you know, I do not care that it is in German).

Dear Sylvia, I know that you were talking about "Spielzeug" and a "Mulchbett", and that is also what I translated (toys and a "Mulchbett" - OK, that is not a translation, but I like that word, because its sound only already gives a comfortable feeling).
Dear Ursula, it seems then that you have had a bad experience and I am sorry for that. Ah well, what more can I say: none of us is perfect (least of all me!!!)and maybe the person in question was having a "bad hair day" or so. But should it therefore be stated as a general rule??? No! Last year in September, I brought Belgian grapes and corn for the bears. I knocked on the door of the Barenhof and Ms. Weckert opened it. I explained her (in English) why I did it and handed it all over to her. Well, again, she accepted it very friendly and thanked me (in German).
By the way, I love your Affen-Department (well done!). And is there already further news on Mr. Opitz' health?

I think Sylvia is referring to your translation of toys or a "Mulchbett" while she is asking for toys and ( 'sowie' )a "Mulchbett".

Liebe Berliner !
Ihr verdient es gar nicht, so einen schönen jungen Eisbären in Berlin zu haben. Und ihr verdient auch nicht den Berliner Zoo.
Ihr seid Zeuge von etwas ganz Besonderem: Die Verantwortlichen des Zoo's versuchen gerade, eine Handaufzucht, noch nicht geschlechtsreif, noch immer den Menschen mehr zugetan als seinen Artgenossen, zu vergesellschaften.
Dies geschieht m.E. sensibel, vorsichtig, ohne Risiko und im Sinne der Tiere.
Es gibt ja keine andere Alternative - man wollte es ja so.
Und was macht ihr ?
Anstatt stolz zu sein und die Umsichtigkeit des Heimatzoo's zu würdigen, wird hier gemeckert und gejammert.
Wegen Spielzeug, Mulch, und anderen Nichtigkeiten.
Ich will nicht abstreiten, dass einige Zoobesucher schlauer und erfahrender sind, als alle Tierärzte und Tierpfleger weltweit zusammen.
Aber leider kommt das dermassen destruktiv rüber, dass ich immer seltener hier reinschaue.
Das nimmt einem die Laune ! Diese Besserwisserei.
Es gibt ein Interview mit TD, der hier so oft zitiert wird. Er wurde gefragt, was er sich für Knuts Zukunft wünsche.
Seine Antwort: Er solle wie ein Eisbär leben.
Dann lasst ihn auch so leben und hört auf, ein kleines Kind mit entsprechenden Bedürfnissen in dem Tier zu sehen.
Wenn das Tier sich beschäftigen will, dann tut es das.
Wenn er dösen will, ebenfalls.
Wenn er schwimmen will, dann tut er das auch.
Und er wird sich an Tosca gewöhnen müssen und darf davon nicht abgelenkt werden. Umso schneller können alle 4 auf der Anlage sein.
Macht euch doch lieber Gedanken, warum Knut sich nach gianna so zurückhaltend benimmt, das wäre doch mal was anderes als der Schrei nach Spielzeug.
Er vermisst weder sein Mulchbett, noch sein Spielzeug, noch sein Futter, noch sein altes kleines Gehege.
Das ist nur eine menschliche Interpretation.
Ihr verkauft euren Zoo nach draußen sehr sehr schlecht.
Nicht alle, aber doch so einige.

Guten Abend, auch ich war am späten Nachmittag noch im Zoo. Mit großer Freude konnte ich neben anderen Knut Freundinnen kurz Doris und Jessie begrüßen.
Knut lag immer noch rechts auf dem äußersten Felsen der Anlage, räkelte sich. Tosca links, auch sie räkelte sich kurz.
Gegen 17:30 h konnten sie in ihre Höhle. Zuerst schaute Knut nach, aber er entfernte sich sehr schnell, ab und zu schnaufend und mit Tapir Lippe als Tosca sich näherte.
Dann folgte Tosca, ebenfalls gaaaanz langsam. Nach mehreren Versuchen verschwand sie dann in der Höhle. Knut folgte ihr. Das wars dann. Wie wird das weitergehen ?
Ich wünsche Allen einen ruhigen Ausklang des Tages und für später eine gute Samstag Nacht.
