Guten Morgen,
an einem trüben und fast verregten Morgen in Berlin.
Möge er für alle heutigen Geburtstagskinder ein guter Tag werden. Besonders aber auch für Ursula (Regenbogen) und für Birgit von der Insel, dem Außenposten von unserem Eisbären. Alles Gute für Euch beide.
Ich wünsche allen Knut Freunden in Fern und Nah einen hoffentlich friedlichen und angenehmen Tag.

Thank you Ursula_Spenke,Regenbogen,Hartmuth for the pics. It is the only source of news about our dear friends at zoos for me. And thanks to all friends for zoo reports and other news.
Here is a reply I received this morning from a complaint about a Dutch zoo from a pic I saw of a mother bear and her cub in a concrete enclosure without a blade of grass.

Dear Joan,
To follow up on the complaint we received from you on 31 July, please find below a reply from the institution (Dierenpark Ouwehands).
Please let the complainant know that Ouwehand Zoo has three inter linkable polar bear enclosures:
one with concrete and water, one with soil and water (this the one complainant saw Freedom and her cub), one with concrete, soil and water.
Total surface area around 4500 square meter. We rotate our polar bear bears (1.2.1) regularly so that they ‘encounter’ an ‘new environment’ at least twice or even three or four times a week.
In case we have no cub, just 1.2 polar bears, we can open up all slide-doors so that the bears are free to roam around three enclosures.
Now that we have a cub, rotation possibilities are a bit limited, because we cannot have mother and cub together with the father.
Apart from this we do apply a lot of enrichment for all polar bears in all three enclosures. This can be toys, frozen blocks of ice with food, branches, scattered feeding. Very rare they have nothing to play with, which is in this case enrichment too.
We keep on trying to make the lives of our polar bears unpredictable so that they do net get bored. Mother Freedom and her cub play a lot with each other, which is another form of enrichment.
Ouwehand Dierenpark is inviting the complainant to visit the institution again so that they can demonstrate the above

Guten Abend,
auch dieser Tag geht langsam seinem Ende zu. Habe gerade einen Spaziergang durch den Zoo gemacht, allerdings nur mit den schönen Fotos von Jessie, die Ursula gepostet hat. Wer mit offenen Augen durch den Zoo geht, der findet diese vielen Kleinode überall.
Zum Abschluss des Tages wieder einige meiner Fotos vom *kleenen Kind*, das inzwischen schon zu einem Teenager herangewachsen ist.
